Looking after your CPAP: a simple cleaning routine
CPAP maintenance is not complicated, but it does need to be regular. Follow the schedule in your device manual; the routine below is the general pattern most manufacturers recommend.
Every day
- Empty any water left in the humidifier chamber and refill with fresh distilled water before the next use.
- Wipe the mask cushion with a damp cloth or a mask wipe to remove facial oils. Oils are the main reason cushions stop sealing.
Every week
- Wash the mask, cushion and headgear in warm water with a mild, unscented soap. Rinse well and air-dry away from direct sunlight.
- Wash the tubing the same way. Hang it over a shower rail or door so water drains out.
- Wash the humidifier chamber and let it dry completely.
Every month, or as the manual says
- Check the inlet filter. Replace it when it looks discoloured — sooner if your room is dusty.
- Inspect the tubing for cracks, and the cushion for stiffness or splits.
What to avoid
Do not use alcohol, bleach, antibacterial soap or strongly scented detergent on anything you breathe through — residue can irritate your airway and can degrade silicone. Do not put CPAP parts in a dishwasher unless the manufacturer specifically permits it. And never immerse the machine itself in water.
When to replace rather than clean
Cushions, tubing and filters are consumables. If a cushion no longer holds a seal after washing, or tubing has developed a crack, replace it — we stock consumables for the machines we sell.
